Well Well Wellington…

The news coming out of NZ this year seems to be natural disaster after disaster. I am pleased to report a more upbeat, happy news story from windy Wellington. Ruben Bryant and his father (well known NZ architect, Ken Bryant) collaborated on this rather wonderful ‘tree house’ inspired design using local Macrocarpa timber to form the bones and main story for uber-hip fashion store GOOD AS GOLD. Covering 170 m2 over 3 levels and, more importantly, some serious design territory, these pics were taken by local wild child, Sean Aickin. This fab find is pure gold and can be found on the corner of Victoria & Manners Streets, Wellington NZ.

Serving it up

Tracey Neuls dishes up rather delicious handmade shoes. If you want to feast on this fab foot ware you need to go to 25 Marylebone Lane, London.

Great window Stuff

Living at the other end of the Earth is no fun if you love to keep an eye-spy on what's happening in retail in Europe and the USA.  Eighteen months ago I decided to ignore the tyranny of distance and make sure I spent more time OS looking at merchandising and emerging trends. I have just returned from my 3rd trip to London in just over 12 months. It's a fabulous city with brilliant retail benchmarks for fashion, food and lots of things in between.

The windows at White Stuff have caught my eye on every visit ... ranging from squirrel heads on mannequins to celebrate autumn, to 'village fete' tea type sets ... each time I have loved their kooky approach. Last week I spotted their super hero cartoon character windows ... too much fun. White Stuff started out as a ski apparel brand ... over the past 25 years they have gone mainstream whilst retaining an indie feel through store design and careful location selection, and from what I can gather continue to post fab sales growth figures. They were onto retro wall papers and props seemingly before everyone else in retail land and their casual, easy to wear, clothing is presented as colour stories. Their VM makes me smile, if not laugh out loud. The 25 year Silver Jubilee theme was a right royal corker ... or should I say a corg-er!  Coronation chicken sandwich anyone?

A little wacky on Wallstrabe

Have been and seen Euroshop 2011 and squeezed in a quick squizz around Dusseldorf old town. Fave find was SecondHand, a somewhat wacky store selling vintage designer labels mixed in with military millinery, furs that were definitely not faux, old Kelly-like bags to wag and a sprinkling of costumes from stage and screen. Some seriously kooky merchandising happening here and from what I could gather the owner is a somewhat famous stylist, but given my lack of German language skills I could easily have misinterpreted this information.  Find Secondhand at 27 Wallstrabe next time you're dashing through Dusseldorf.

K.I.S.S

Iconic sporty swimwear label, Speedo, really know how to keep the story simple. I liked their Christmas window and their latest one is to the same exacting standard. Streamlined cozzie design showcased with the same thinking behind the instore VM strategy ... so on brand. Spotted at Chadstone.

Not bad Mim

I spotted this new brand, and brand new store, at Chadstone this week. Mim Design has delivered a striking look for the BadAss lifestyle label. Designed in Australia, the range includes all sorts of carry bags and accessories for the electronic gadgets we can't seem to live without these days. The smiling face belongs to super sales girl, Kitty... I can only say her enthusiasm is a rare find in retail land these days!

Jim jam man

Fun windows featuring a motorised gingerbread man can be found in Peter Alexander stores this festive season.

Now you see it

I have spotted a Bonds pop up concept in various Myer stores over the past few weeks. Designed by Sydney architect Kelvin Ho, the spaces have been created using recyclable cardboard including pizza and shoe boxes. Selling a casual range of grey, white and black pieces designed to be worn by either men or women, apparently these temporary stores will disappear just before Santa pops down the chimney.
